Her Work

As a dancer, Phoebe began in front of her family for post dinner performances as a young child and by age 14 she performed professionally. In New York City, she was honored to dance in Amy Marshall’s company and to perform in a number of projects with David Parsons. The height of her performance career was performing in Urbino, Italy in 2001, where she danced with fabulous dancers in an Italian piazza under the stars.

Her teaching career started in 1998 at the Rock School of Pennsylvania Ballet where she taught Horton and Graham Modern Dance techniques. She moved to New York in 1999 and began teaching dance in the tri-state area. After receiving her Pilates certification in 2002, she taught Pilates and dance at New York City dance studios, Peridance and Steps on Broadway.

Throughout the years, Phoebe has taught Pilates, Yoga and dance at spas and universities along the East coast. Currently, she continues to teach at Steps as well as at Body Strength Fitness Center on the Upper West Side. There she introduced a more traditional Pilates disciplined class to the students which has gained much popularity. She also works for OnSite Fitness which brings fitness classes to corporations such as Time Inc, and Penguin Publishing. In addition to her group classes, Phoebe has maintained her own private business for the past four years with the help of Spa-NYC.com.

“Teaching is something everyone can learn from. Some of the most profound learning lessons have been while teaching my students. It the most amazing thing to see them discover things they once thought were impossible!”

Her Studies

Phoebe first began her study of movement at the age of four in dance classes. She studied ballet, jazz, modern, and musical theater throughout her childhood. After high school, she moved to Philadelphia where she graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a BFA in Modern Dance in 1998. She continued on to New York City shortly after to continue her studies and to pursue a performance career. Her most influential teacher was world renowned Horton expert, Milton Myers.

In effort to strengthen her dancing, Phoebe began studying Pilates with teacher Linda Farrell, at Broadway Dance Center. After four years, Phoebe went on to receive her certification at the Kane School of Core Integration in 2002. The idea of taking care of the body and the focus of correct alignment is what really attracted Phoebe to Pilates.

After teaching Pilates for two years, Phoebe looked to improve and vary the Pilates experience for herself and her students. Yoga was something she practiced off and on again throughout life but it wasn’t until her teacher Elizabeth Andes-Bell when she pursued it more seriously. “Experience your experiences” were Bell’s words of encouragement for Phoebe. She studied with Elizabeth privately and in classes for over a year. She then continued on at the Yoga Works Studio. There Phoebe studied with such inspirational teachers as Jeanmarie Paolillo, Jenny Aurthur, Jodi Rufty, Ann Mosca, and Yogiraj Alan Finger. She received her Yoga Certification in 2006.

Phoebe is grateful for her teachers she has studied with throughout the years. They have given her such insight she has taken along the way that have lead her on a path that she is very thankful for. She hopes she can touch at least a few of her own students in the same way. One of the most important things for Phoebe as a teacher is to never stop learning.
